Project Title: Promoting Chinese Dual Language Learners’ Language and Pre-academic Skills: Role of Early Childhood Teachers' Knowledge and Practices

Location: Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn early childhood centers and DOE Pre-k centers and schools

Position: Research Intern

Time Status: Part-time

Schedule: 8-10 hours per week, approximately 2 hours per day in the mornings. Flexibility to stay after noon occasionally to assess children is highly desired.

Project Overview: The study is conducted under the direction of Dr. Lulu Song, Assistant Professor of Brooklyn College, CUNY. The purpose of this research study is to better understand the relations among early childhood teachers’ knowledge, practices, and Chinese dual language learners’ (DLLs) language and pre-academic skills. The results of this study may help improve policy and practice surrounding early childhood education in dual-language contexts.

Position Description: Dr. Song is seeking professional and responsible Research Interns to support data collection efforts for the above study. Under the supervision by Dr. Song or a senior Research Associate/Assistant, the intern will perform tasks of working with the early childhood education centers to identify, recruit, and schedule study participants, video- and audio-recording teacher-child interactions in early childhood classrooms during morning routines, interviewing parents, assessing children's language and pre-academic skills in both English and Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) using standardized tests, entering and managing collected data, and weekly check-ins with Dr. Song or the data collection supervisor. With training, the intern is expected to perform these tasks individually.

Qualifications

Key Qualification:

  • Bilingual and biliterate in English and Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese). Candidates must be able to speak, read, and write in English and Chinese fluently.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain NYC DOE fingerprint clearance (cost will be reimbursed) and CITI human subject training certificate (free and online).
  • Candidates must be able to interact with teachers, school staff, children, and parents in a professional manner.
  • Candidates must be able to conduct research procedures at lower Manhattan and/or Brooklyn sites during classroom morning routines at least four days a week. Flexibility to stay till the afternoon occasionally to assess children is highly desired.

Other Qualifications:

  • Previous experience conducting research or assessment with young children (3-5 years old) is highly preferred, although not required.
  • Previous training and/or coursework in related fields (education, psychology, social work, public health, etc.) and research methods is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent communication skills in order to explain the research protocol, obtain informed consent, and conduct interviews with the study participants
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Mature personality including: adaptability/flexibility, resourceful, energetic, dependable, assertive, professional, and punctual
  • The ability to establish professional limit setting, maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
  • The ability to take initiative, working independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Comfort and competence (after training) with using video- and audio-recording technology and standardized child assessments
  • Experience working with diverse populations, especially ethnic Chinese children and parents
