Category: Instruction and Social Service
Location: HUNTER COLLEGE

Job Description

General Description

The New York City Mental Health Service Corps (MHSC) is a key initiative of Thrive NYC: A Mental Health Roadmap for All– a comprehensive public health approach to mental health designed to promote and protect the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. The MHSC fills the too long neglected gaps in mental health and substance use services throughout NYC by creating a corps of approximately 400 mental health clinicians able to provide effective evidence-based mental health treatment in high-need communities. Through best practices and a better design of care, the initiative will increase the diversity of behavioral health clinicians in the workforce and strengthen care where it is needed the most.

MHSC focuses on the recruitment, training, and support of early career social workers to increase access to mental health services in primary care and behavioral health settings throughout high need areas of New York City. MHSC provides a structured supervision system as required in New York for clinicians who are accumulating clinical and supervision hours towards advanced licensure. Additionally clinicians participate in a continuing professional development program provided by MHSC that includes regularly scheduled in-person and webinar based workshops.  Clinicians will serve with MHSC for three years. Upon completion of these three years, clinicians will have made an important contribution to the mental health of New Yorkers.

The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is one of the specific placement opportunities within MHSC. NFP is a nationally replicated nurse home visiting program that serves first-time, low-income mothers and their families from pregnancy through the child's second birthday. The NFP model has been rigorously evaluated for over 30 years and has demonstrated significant improvements in pregnancy outcomes, parenting practices, child health and development, and family self-sufficiency. MHSC social workers placed with NFP will work under the direct supervision of The Manager of Mental Health and Strategic Partnerships. The social worker will provide short-term in-home therapy for clients identified by nurse home visitors (NHV) as requiring mental health services while also serving as an advocate to clients navigating social services. The social worker will also offer consultation to NHVs re: clients with mental health/social service needs. The ideal candidate is organized, motivated, creative, adaptive to change and willing to work in the field 80% of the time or more as needed. Bilingual Spanish a plus.

MHSC is a city-funded program housed under Hunter College, CUNY and the Research Foundation of CUNY. All MHSC staff are employees of the Research Foundation of CUNY. Excellent Benefits and Vacation Package from RF-CUNY.
