The Baruch STEP Academy is an academic enrichment program focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and providing college preparation. Managed through the CUNY Research Foundation, we serve over 200 middle and high school students throughout the city. High School Science Instructor (In-Person Position)

Course: Introduction to Bioethics 

Description: Bioethics is the study of ethical, social, and legal issues that arise in biomedicine and biomedical research. The goal of the course is to help students acquire strategies for analyzing bioethical cases. Please note that the course will cover mature and sensitive topics.

Class Schedule: Saturdays from 10:35am-12:05pm | 1.5 hours of instruction + 1 hour of prep = total of 2.5 hours

 

Summary of Responsibilities

The STEP Academy at Baruch College is seeking to fill a spring IN-PERSON instructor position for the high school program. The course will introduce students to an intensive subject for 12 sessions. The goal of the course is to engage students in an exploratory or advanced experience, not provided in a standard classroom. There is a curriculum designed for this course.

Other Duties

  • Plan, teach and prepare materials for 20 students
  • Evaluate student and group performance
  • Provide staff with measurable results in student learning through assessments
  • Monitor and maintain student attendance records  
  • Reassess curriculum to account for students' needs, interests, and understanding of material 

Qualifications

Required

  • Availability for each scheduled Saturday in the spring- Instruction time: 10:35am-12:05pm.
  • Major in STEM or health sciences
  • Prior teaching experience with high school or undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated ability to create an engaging learning environment for students
  • Enthusiasm for the subject and possess good interpersonal skills with teenagers


Preferred

  • Degree in a related STEM field
  • Ability to engage students with creative lessons and innovative teaching style
  • Possess a strong classroom management style
  • Thorough understanding of subject with sensitivity to students' maturity level and emotional reactions to delicate discussion topics
