General Description

A full time position is available for a technician in a neuroscience laboratory in the CUNY School of Medicine. The laboratory is located in a new state-of-the-art research facility. Our research studies ways to improve function after a spinal cord injury using pre-clinical animal models. We use brain and spinal cord stimulation to promote neuronal activity-dependent plasticity and tissue regenerative processes. Our experiments incorporate microscopy; neural stimulation; recording of brain, spinal cord, and muscle electrical activity; and behavioral training.

Other Duties

Key skills for successful applicant include:

  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and students
  • Knowledge of basic computing, including the ability to work with Microsoft Excel.
  • Willing to be trained to perform laboratory tasks in a safe and timely fashion
  • Excellent organizational skills and be able to keep accurate record and notes.

There are 4 principal duties for this position:

  1. Participate in rodent experiments. The position requires: assisting scientists during animal surgeries, helping with pre- and post-surgical care; and maintaining general animal care and surgical records.
  2. Assist in training animals to perform motor tasks (e.g., reaching and locomotion).
  3. Data analyses include: quantitative microscopy, analysis of brain, spinal cord, and muscle electrical signals; biochemical and genetic analyses (Western blotting, qPCR)
  4. Aspects of lab management, including checking inventory of supplies.

Qualifications

Education: BS/BA; in Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field
