About us: LMIS is a workforce development and educational opportunity-focused research, evaluation, and consulting organization. Housed within the Center for Urban Research at the CUNY Graduate Center, we are social science researchers with diverse backgrounds and skillsets.

We support other mission-driven groups by helping them harness the power of research insights and labor market data to inform best-practice programming and engagement of their client communities. Other Duties

About the role: We seek a full-time research associate to contribute content and technical expertise aligned with our research and organizational goals as outlined below.

  • 70% - Research:
    • Engage in research project planning, including the development of research questions and an appropriate research methodology to respond to them;
    • Access and analyze economic, labor market, demographic, and other secondary data sets;
    • Conduct primary data collection, including developing & disseminating electronic surveys and summarizing their results, conducting and documenting interviews, and planning focus groups;
    • Draft compelling and accessible project materials such as research briefs, reports, presentation slides, and summary handouts for a diverse array of audiences and stakeholder groups.
  • 15% - Client engagement and support:
    • Participate in meetings with clients and research partners to agenda set, provide progress updates, and present findings;
    • Draft correspondence with clients;
    • Draft scopes of work for potential clients;
    • Draft invoices for completed work.
  • 15% - Other organizational and technical assistance activities: The research associate will contribute to other priorities as needed, such as our website, quarterly e-newsletter (the LMIS LaborLink), events, and grant preparation.

Qualifications

We’re seeking someone who shares our organizational orientation, which includes being collaborative with each other and our research partners, team-oriented, feedback-seeking, and emotionally intelligent. 

Below are the skills and experience that are a good fit for this role:

Technical skills/ credentials:

  • Master’s degree in a social science or related area, and 3-5 years of professional experience in a research, policy, or consultancy setting;
  • Considerable familiarity with labor market data and its applications;
  • Intermediate to advanced facility with Microsoft Office Suite and at least one of the following statistical analysis applications: SPSS, SAS, R;
  • Strong writing skills and experience drafting research briefs and reports for a diverse array of audiences;
  • Proficiency with descriptive statistics and data manipulation (e.g., computing and recoding variables, merging files), and applying the findings to research questions in ways that are accessible to audiences with a variety of backgrounds and expertise;
  • Experience conducting qualitative research (e.g., focus groups, semi-structured interviews), and analyzing data using qualitative methods and programs such as Dedoose.

About the Research Foundation

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) is a nonprofit educational corporation founded in 1963 to provide post-award fiscal and administrative support for CUNY’s research and sponsored programs. RFCUNY’s services allow CUNY researchers, faculty, and staff to focus on their intellectual curiosity and scientific discoveries, on projects and programs that serve our local and global communities, proposing concrete solutions to society’s most pressing challenges.

RFCUNY serves as a fiscal agent and works closely with all the CUNY campus Grants Offices to perform the core functions of post-award financial management for CUNY research projects and sponsored programs. These functions include legal assessment and signing of agreements where RFCUNY is named as a fiscal agent; setting up award accounts; preparing sub-awards and assisting PIs in monitoring the work of the recipients of sub-awards; supporting project directors with hiring and managing research project and sponsored program staff; supporting the purchasing and paying for goods and services with grant and program funds; managing financial aspects of projects including accounts receivable, financial reporting, invoicing, budget monitoring, and cost compliance with uniform guidance; ensuring that sponsor financial requirements are met; monitoring compliance with applicable project and financial management rules and laws; supporting the management of independent and external audits and financial reviews; and providing data, information, management expertise, and other supports to CUNY’s research and sponsored programs.
