General Description
The New York City Mental Health Service Corps (MHSC) is a key initiative of Thrive NYC: A Mental Health Roadmap for All– a comprehensive public health approach to mental health designed to promote and protect the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. The MHSC fills the too long neglected gaps in mental health and substance use services throughout NYC by creating a corps of approximately 400 mental health clinicians placed in high-need communities. Through best practices and a better design of care, the initiative will increase the diversity of behavioral health clinicians in the workforce and strengthen care where it is needed the most.
MHSC focuses on the recruitment, training, and support of early career social workers and licensed mental health counselors to become fully licensed behavioral health clinicians with a specific focus on incorporating evidence-based practices in primary care and behavioral health settings throughout New York City. Through a structured supervision system and task-shifting model, clinicians are able to obtain advanced licensure through the MHSC and strengthen their own capacity to be able to provide sound behavioral health services in marginalized communities and populations. MHSC is a city-funded program housed under Hunter College, CUNY and the Research Foundation of CUNY. All MHSC staff are employees of the Research Foundation of CUNY.
The supervising psychiatric nurse practitioner is responsible for supporting behavioral health care in primary care clinics using an integrated care model incorporating treatment to target through systematic monitoring of symptoms and a stepped care approach. The psychiatric nurse practitioner will be one member of the team implementing integrated care - each clinic also has an MHSC Behavioral Health Clinician (either a social worker or mental health counselor) placed full-time in the practice. Other members of the team include the staff at the clinic as well as a MHSC administrative support personnel and discipline specific clinical supervisor. Psychiatric nurse practitioners will also have access to collaborate with an MHSC supervising psychiatrist and the medical director as applicable.
Other Duties
- Assistance to primary care clinics on workflow management and practice transformation towards integrated mental health care.
- Weekly caseload consultation to MHSC Behavioral Health Clinicians (BHC) in order to track and oversee patient panels and clinical outcomes and suggest treatment plan adjustments (including medication recommendations and modifications to psychotherapy) for patients who are not improving as expected.
- Communicate with PCPs regarding recommendations for treatment plan.
- Telephone support to BHC when dealing with crisis situations in patient care (in collaboration with the clinician’s discipline specific clinical supervisor).
- Discuss patients who need referral for specialty mental health care and advise monitoring in primary care until patient is engaged in mental health care.
- Maintain records as required by MHSC.
- Support primary care physician and BHC in developing knowledge about behavioral health conditions and treatment when teaching opportunities arise during individual interactions.
- Develop and deliver in-service training to PCPs and other staff at clinics regarding recognition and treatment of behavioral health conditions in primary care.
- Maintain professional cell phone and email accounts for contact during business hours.
- Coordinate with other psychiatry supervisors for vacation coverage.
TYPICAL WORKLOAD:
- The typical workload of a full-time supervising psychiatric nurse practitioner includes regular (weekly) consultation with approximately 12 assigned MHSC Behavioral Health Clinicians (BHC). Part-time employees will have a proportionate number of BHC’s assigned based on the number of hours worked per week.
- Time at the clinics may also include consultation directly to PCPs, although these consultations may also be conducted via telemedicine (video or telephone).
- Participate in weekly group supervision with BHCs and their clinical supervisors.
- Attend administrative meetings and trainings as required by MHSC.
Qualifications
- NYS Licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Positive, flexible, and solution-focused attitude.
- Ability to quickly synthesize medical and psychiatric data and formulate effective and evidence-based clinical recommendations
Preferred:
- Experience with primary care/collaborative care psychiatry or consultation-liaison psychiatry.
