General Description

The Plumbing 1 training program is a hands-on, skills-based course that prepares students to begin a career in the plumbing field using the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Construction Core and Plumbing 1 curricula.  The course takes place at Queens Vocational and Technical High School in Long Island City Mondays, Wednesday, and Thursdays 4:30pm-9:30pm March 19-June 27 and includes OSHA10 training and certification. 

The Plumbing 1 instructor teaches the course, following the NCCER curriculum and engaging students in the material using discussions, interactive activities, and skills practice.  The instructor will also recommend supplies for purchase and coordinate with program staff and partners at LaGuardia Community College and Queens Vocational and Technical High School.  There are 15 hours/week of class time, 4 hours/week of teacher prep and 10 hours of teacher prep before the course begins.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach NCCER Construction Core and Plumbing 1 Curriculum to 15-27 students, depending on enrollment, guiding the students through mastery of the competencies included.
  • Engage students in the material using discussions, interactive activities and skills practice, as specified in the curriculum, and as needed to support the students in acquiring the required skills and competencies.
  • Prepare appropriately for class and help students to feel comfortable and supported in class.
  • Recommend supplies for purchase and oversee the purchase and maintenance of equipment and supplies, with the support of the Program Assistant and Director.
  • Ensure that facilities and equipment at Queens Vocational and Technical High School are used and maintained properly throughout the course, in consultation with the DOE Supervisor and Assistant Principal of Organization and Security.
  • Communicate and coordinate regularly with program staff, including the Program Assistant, DOE Supervisor, Director and Executive Director at LaGuardia Community College and the Assistant Principal of Organization and Security at Queens Vocational and Technical High School, in order to ensure smooth and successful delivery of the program.

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • 5-10 years’ experience as a plumber in New York City.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Commitment to education, talent development, and student learning.
  • Attention to detail and care in overseeing use of equipment and supplies.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • 2+ years’ experience teaching similar courses.
  • Familiar with the NCCER curricula.
  • Certified to teach the NCCER curricula.
