Education Curator

The Lehamn College Art Gallery seeks a Curator of Education, who should have a broad, substantive knowledge of art history and specialized knowledge in contemporary art and committed to working with young people, teachers and administrators from K-12 Bronx public schools. Specific responsibilities include: teaching in all aspects of LCAG’s programs, including but not limited to single-visit and multi-session workshops for students both on and off site; conducting professional development workshops for teachers. Teaching includes strategy planning with LCAG staff, implementation of strategy in the classroom, and direct instruction with students in pre-K through grade 12, and with learners of all ages. Other responsibilities: carrying out administrative responsibilities, i.e. submission of written lesson plans, assessments, teaching schedules, and payment forms.

Lehman College Art Gallery is a dynamic visual arts institution serving the greater New York area as well as the Lehman College campus of the City University of New York. The gallery, a separately incorporated 501(c)3, presents contemporary art exhibitions and education programs. It also promotes the art and architecture through two educational Websites, Bronx Public Art and Bronx Architecture. The gallery has a very active school program for K-12 students with over 12,0000 visits in the current year. Its exhibitions and programs have received critical attention in the press including The New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews, Art Nexus and many other periodicals. Lehman is a liberal arts college on 37 tree-lined acres in the Bronx, the gallery is located in the center of the campus in a building designed by Marcel Breuer.

Required Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong commitment working with educators and young people, as well as a curiosity in exploring LCAG’s philosophy and approach to arts in education. Must have availability to work during school hours, as well as occasional evenings and weekends; willingness to travel to school sites; strong oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills; ability to facilitate group decision-making; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; strong attention to detail. Teaching experience with diverse age groups and educational settings is a plus.

The Curator of Education will: •operate under the direction of the LCAG executive director and head curator, Bartholomew Bland. •have at least 5 years of facilitation experience •Masters Degree (preferred) •serve as liaison to Bronx public schools K-12 •organize workshops and lectures to develop public awareness and get community to experience contemporary art through our exhibitions. •have knowledge of and experience in workshop/session planning *possess strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills •committed to bringing the best, high quality arts programming possible to the young people we work with. •have knowledge of contemporary art •participate in planning sessions with public school teachers and administrators •bi-lingual(English/Spanish) a plus
