General Description
Through its partnership with the City of New York, CUNY’a Building Performance Laboratory is hiring qualified energy management professionals to serve as on-site consultants and fill critical staffing capacity needs at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services’ (“DCAS”) Division of Energy Management (“DEM”). For background, DEM serves as the hub for energy management for City government operations. DEM develops the City’s annual Heat, Light, and Power Budget; manages the City’s electricity, natural gas, and steam accounts; helps their agency partners identify and pursue energy-saving opportunities; does energy efficiency and clean power generation projects across the City’s portfolio; and implements operations and maintenance best practices. Specifically, DEM is tasked with leading the City’s efforts to reduce emissions from City government operations 40 percent by 2025, 50 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050 from baseline. For this specific role, on behalf of DEM, CUNY BPL seeks an Associate Energy Engineer to serve within DEM’s Project Development Group, which sits within the Operations Unit. Under the direction of the Deputy Director, Project Development, the Associate Energy Engineer will provide energy engineering expertise to support portfolio-wide emissions reduction planning and project identification for City agency partners.

Under this assignment, the person’s responsibilities may include the following:
- Managing energy audit execution.
- Creating tools necessary for portfolio-wide emissions reduction planning and project identification.
- Providing engineering support and technical assistance to support other initiatives within DEM.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experience to this position:
- Bachelor of science in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- At least three years of experience in analyzing equipment operations and specifying equipment upgrades to improve system energy performance.
- Familiarity with boiler and chiller operations and maintenance; HVAC controls; computerized building automation and energy management systems; variable air volume (VAV) distribution systems; steam and chilled water system optimization methods; and overall heating and cooling system performance.
- Knowledge of and experience in using ASHRAE Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits and Retro-commissioning.
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) credential.
- Familiarity with energy cost, savings, and greenhouse gas calculation methodology.
- Familiarity with issues pertaining to energy efficiency in existing buildings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft applications (Advanced Excel skills a must).
- High level of productivity: organized, detail-oriented, capable of meeting and even exceeding deadlines, and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
